THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shashi Tharoor has joined a new club of celebrities who have made their mark with their fan following through social networking. Now he has become second only to Sachin Tendulkar in the country by crossing one million followers in leading the Indian twitterati.
Shashi Tharoor, who has a big fan following, particularly among the youth, has overtaken the two stalwarts of Bollywood; Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan on his way to this esteemed club.
The twitter followers of Shashi Tharoor crossed the one-million mark on Thursday and currently stands at 10,01,735. Sachin Tendulkar, who had crossed the one-million mark, stands with 10,51,793 followers last week.
While responding to this huge fan following of his, Shashi Tharoor tweeted on Friday, “Thanks for all your congratulatory messages on reaching one million followers. It’s been an interesting journey and I have been glad to have you along.’’
Though Tharoor is an early adapter of twitter, it has often become a bane for him while he was serving as a minister in the UPA Government. He is rated as a trailblazer in using it as an interactive medium to reach out to people. But often his remarks in twitter had led to several criticisms and controversies.
It is also interesting to note that only two politicians have found place in the top 50 having large number of followers. BJP leader Sushma Swaraj with 58,268 followers and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with 22,880 followers are the only two who have gained more fan-following in this networking.
Next to Shashi Tharoor is Priyanka Chopra who has 9,60,194 followers followed by Shah Rukh Khan (8,63,354), Amitabh Bachchan (7,22,270), Salman Khan (6,74,257), Deepika Padukone (6,62,356), Aamir Khan (6,56,991), Preity Zinta (5,90,177), Hrithik Roshan (5,56,178), Abhishek Bachchan (5,00,572) and Yuvaraj Singh (4,61,820).
From Kerala, Sreesanth has a following of 1,72,132, Mohanlal 60,167, Mammootty 43,883 and Prithviraj 29,618 followers.
