About the photo: Shashi Tharoor greets an old woman during his election campaign at Kovalam on Sunday. At the same event, when a middle-aged woman greeted him by putting a scarf around his neck, Tharoor returned the compliment instantly by putting another scarf around her neck as the crowd burst into laughter — DC

It is evening and a noisy auditorium is packed. As people listen listlessly to the flurry of speeches being made by local Congress leaders, they crane their necks to look at the road.

Then an SUV comes to a halt near the venue. Within moments, a smiling Mr Shashi Tharoor clad in a blue kurta and spotless white mundu alights from the vehicle.

He is greeted with a big round of applause. The warmth of ordinary people clearly shows that Mr Tharoor’s popularity is intact despite the IPL controversy.

Mr Tharoor is a man in a hurry and his speech is crisp and brief. “Kumbhakarna used to sleep for six months and woke up only to eat,” he said. “The LDF slept for past five years, now all of sudden it has woken up to eat your votes and go to sleep once more.”
